Arambai Tenggol Surrenders 246 Weapons in Manipur Amidst Peace Efforts

Imphal, Manipur: In a major step towards restoring peace in violence-hit Manipur, the Arambai Tenggol, a key Meitei group, surrendered 246 weapons to security forces on the final day of the state’s deadline to return illegal and looted arms. A total of 307 weapons were surrendered across the state, including 61 from other locations in both valley and hill districts.

The decision came after assurances from Governor Ajay Bhalla, including the eradication of illegal opium poppy cultivation, border fencing for security, the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) with 1951 as the base year, and ensuring no further attacks by Kuki militants. The group has also sought general amnesty for its members, which authorities have agreed to consider.

Officials believe the voluntary surrender will help restore law and order in a state rocked by ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities since May 2023, which has resulted in over 250 deaths and thousands displaced. The police have urged those still in possession of illegal arms to surrender them before the deadline, warning of strict legal action thereafter.

Manipur has been under President’s Rule since February 13, following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, plunging the state into political uncertainty. The Ministry of Home Affairs has placed the state Assembly under suspended animation until further notice.
