A Model for Sustainable Development in Vasai-Virar: VVMC has funded all 1 lakh saplings

Vasai-Virar, 24 September 2025: In a landmark step towards environmental conservation and community welfare, the Vasai-Virar region is set to witness the planting of 1 lakh bamboo saplings. The initiative, launched on Wednesday by Forest Minister Ganesh Naik, marks one of the largest bamboo plantation drives in the district.
The saplings will be planted across 87.54 hectares of land, including forest plots allotted to 244 tribal families. This ambitious project not only targets climate change mitigation but also promises a sustainable source of income for local tribal farmers.
Bamboo, known as “green gold,” is being promoted for its carbon absorption capacity and its potential to create long-term livelihoods. The cultivation drive in Palghar district, particularly Vasai-Virar, aims to balance ecological preservation with economic empowerment of tribal communities.
The program was officially inaugurated at the Mahavir Dham Charitable Trust auditorium in Virar, where distribution of bamboo saplings also began. The Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) has funded the massive effort, ensuring that all 1 lakh saplings are sourced and provided locally.
With global concerns over deforestation and rising carbon emissions, this plantation drive puts Vasai-Virar on the map as a model for urban-forest collaboration. Bamboo plantations, with their rapid growth rate and versatility, are expected to play a crucial role in both ecosystem restoration and green economy development.
