CM Fadnavis Inaugurates Newly Renamed 'Sindoor Flyover', Connecting East and West Mumbai

Mumbai, July 10: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis officially inaugurated the much-awaited Sindoor Flyover—formerly known as the Carnac Bridge—on Thursday morning, marking a significant milestone in Mumbai’s infrastructure development. The revamped bridge, a vital link between South Mumbai’s eastern and western corridors, aims to ease long-standing traffic congestion in the area.

Strategically located near Masjid Bunder railway station, the 328-meter-long flyover now connects P D’Mello Road with key commercial hubs such as Crawford Market, Kalbadevi, and Mohammad Ali Road. The project is a part of Operation Sindoor, a civic initiative that also included renaming the structure from its colonial-era designation after James Rivett Carnac, former Governor of Bombay.

Constructed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Sindoor Flyover replaces the 150-year-old Carnac Bridge, which was dismantled in August 2022 due to structural concerns. Under the leadership of Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar, the project saw swift progress, with completion achieved by June 10, 2025.

The bridge comprises 70 meters of track-level structure within railway premises and 230 meters of approach roads. Its construction included two massive steel girders, each weighing 550 metric tonnes. The southern girder was installed on October 19, 2024, while the northern girder was placed across two days—January 26 and 30, 2025—during scheduled railway traffic blocks. This phase required intricate engineering to align the girders at a height of 8–9 meters.

The flyover has undergone successful load testing and secured all mandatory safety certifications. It is expected to significantly improve east-west connectivity, reduce congestion at critical junctions, and streamline access to Mumbai’s densely populated commercial zones.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by several dignitaries including IT and Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar and Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani. Public traffic movement across the flyover is scheduled to commence from 3 PM today.

The Sindoor Flyover stands as a testament to Mumbai’s growing urban transformation and the city’s commitment to enhancing civic infrastructure for its ever-expanding population.
