India Triumphs: Retains Asian Champions Trophy Title with Stellar Performance

India’s women’s hockey team claimed the Asian Champions Trophy title for the third time, defeating China 1-0 in a gripping final at Rajgir, Bihar. Deepika Sehrawat, the tournament's top scorer and Player of the Tournament, secured the victory with a stunning reverse shot early in the third quarter, marking her 11th goal of the competition.
The match saw fierce competition, with both teams showcasing defensive resilience in the first half. Goalkeeper Bichu Devi made a pivotal save against a penalty corner from China in the second quarter, keeping the scoreline intact. Deepika’s decisive goal came after a fifth penalty corner for India, converting Navneet Kaur's pass into a precise strike.
China’s late push for an equaliser was met with India’s unyielding defence, sealing a historic win for the hosts. The victory not only underscores India’s dominance in the region but also serves as a morale booster after missing out on Paris 2024, as the team now rebuilds for Los Angeles 2028.
Rewards flowed in for the triumphant team, with the Bihar Government and Hockey India announcing generous cash awards for players and support staff. Meanwhile, Japan secured the bronze with a 4-1 win over Malaysia.
This victory cements India’s place as a powerhouse in Asian women’s hockey and marks a promising start to coach Harendra Singh’s renewed tenure.
