Sambhal Violence: U.P. Govt to Recover Damages from Protesters, Display Posters of Stone Pelters

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a tough stance in response to the violence that erupted in Sambhal on November 24, 2024, during a second survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid, a mosque that some claim was originally a Hindu temple. Four people lost their lives, and dozens, including police personnel, were injured after clashes between protesters and security forces.

In a bid to hold protesters accountable, U.P. officials have decided to publicly display posters of those involved in stone-pelting and other acts of violence, while also pursuing the recovery of damages caused to public property. A reward may be announced for information leading to the arrest of the culprits.

The violence began when a crowd gathered at the mosque site, protesting a court-ordered survey. The situation worsened when protesters clashed with police, set vehicles on fire, and hurled stones at security personnel. Authorities have arrested 25 people and filed multiple FIRs, including against local politicians, while over 2,750 individuals remain unidentified.

The Uttar Pradesh government previously used a similar tactic during the 2020 anti-CAA protests, but the posters were removed after a court ruling. A magisterial inquiry is currently underway, and authorities have promised stringent action against those responsible for the violence.
