24-Year-Old Held for Stealing SBI Manager’s ₹12 Lakh Mahindra Thar in Mumbai

Mumbai, August 25, 2025: In a major breakthrough, the Matunga Police have arrested a 24-year-old man in connection with the theft of a Mahindra Thar SUV worth ₹12 lakh. The stolen vehicle belonged to Trupti Nandlal Sumani, a branch manager with the State Bank of India (SBI), currently posted in Panaji, Goa.

The accused, identified as Dattatray Sarjerao Pawar, is a resident of Baheti Ali, Khatav Taluka in Satara district. Acting on technical surveillance and investigative leads, police traced Pawar to Mankhurd, where he was taken into custody. The black Mahindra Thar (Registration No: UP-78-GV-2977) was also successfully recovered.

Sumani, 46, had purchased the SUV on December 31, 2021, for personal use and typically parked it outside her residential building on Shivdi-Wadala Road, Mumbai. Before relocating to Goa for her posting on July 7, 2025, she had asked a colleague, Shankar Aidole, to clean the vehicle weekly in her absence.

On July 15, Aidole discovered the vehicle missing around 9 a.m., but was unable to contact Sumani immediately. Upon her return on July 25, Sumani checked the area thoroughly on July 25 and 26, but to no avail. She then lodged a formal complaint at Matunga Police Station.

Following the registration of the case, police launched a swift investigation. The accused was located and arrested, and the stolen vehicle was seized from his possession.

Police are now probing whether Pawar was involved in any other vehicle thefts across Mumbai and surrounding regions. Further investigations are currently underway.
