Mumbai Metro Line 4 Set for Trial Runs in September; Coaches Mounted on Tracks in Thane

Mumbai: The much-anticipated Mumbai Metro Line 4, also known as the Yellow Line, is gearing up for trial runs in September 2025, marking a major milestone in the city’s transit infrastructure. The corridor, stretching from Wadala via Ghatkopar to Kasarvadavali, is poised to become a vital link between Mumbai and Thane.

Late Sunday night, the first set of trial train coaches were mounted onto the tracks near Anand Nagar in Thane, signaling the beginning of visible ground-level progress in the eastern suburbs. These trial coaches, while not final passenger stock, are built to the same specifications and will be used for system checks and track testing.

According to officials, this trial phase will test all operational systems and readiness of the infrastructure. The rolling stock contract for Line 4 was awarded in February to the Larsen & Toubro–Alstom joint venture, and the arrival of coaches in Thane marks a crucial pre-operational step.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, speaking at a recent public event, confirmed that the Metro 4 corridor is expected to open to the public next year. He also highlighted the progress of the Thane internal metro line, which will offer seamless interchange with Line 4, enhancing last-mile connectivity across Thane and adjoining areas.“The Yellow Line will significantly decongest roads and offer smoother, faster travel between Mumbai and Thane,” said a senior metro project official.

The first phase of operations is scheduled to launch in February 2026, covering a 10.5-km stretch between Gaimukh and Cadbury Junction, encompassing 10 stations under Metro Line 4A and a part of Line 4.

Once completed, Metro Line 4 is expected to be a game-changer for urban commuters, easing pressure on the Mumbai-Thane roadway and providing an efficient, eco-friendly transport alternative.
