Mumbai's Bold Water Transport Dream: Revolutionizing Connectivity

Mumbai, Maharashtra: Mumbai’s transport woes could soon be a thing of the past, thanks to ambitious plans set to reshape the city’s commuting landscape. State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik has revealed an exciting proposal to introduce a comprehensive water transport system to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), alongside other groundbreaking projects like underground parking hubs and pod taxis.
Speaking to Mid-day, Sarnaik emphasized that cities worldwide with access to seas and rivers—like Mumbai—should prioritize water transport. With deep creeks and river routes, the city is perfectly positioned for such an initiative. “I am surprised Mumbai and MMR don’t already have a robust water transport network. We are taking this very seriously now,” he stated.
Key projects in the pipeline include water taxis, water Metro services, and Ro-Ro ferries. Sarnaik has tasked his department with developing a detailed plan, expecting submissions within two to three months. A dedicated agency, akin to a rail corporation, will be created to manage this system, ensuring its success beyond previous isolated, failed attempts.
In addition to water transport, Sarnaik is focusing on alleviating the city’s parking crisis with plans for large underground parking hubs near metro and railway stations, complete with modern amenities. This initiative will ensure seamless last-mile connectivity for commuters.
Other exciting proposals include the introduction of pod taxis between Bandra Kurla Complex and Kurla, and ropeways for improved urban mobility. The pod taxi project is set to roll out within the next two years, with in-principle approval from Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.
These transformative projects are part of a long-term vision to tackle Mumbai's congestion, enhance connectivity, and make commuting a hassle-free experience.
