Mumbai Woman Harassed for Months After Rejecting Marriage Proposal: "I Feel Unsafe in My Own Home"

Nalasopara, Mumbai:  A woman from Nalasopara, Mumbai, endured months of harassment after rejecting a marriage proposal from a man who repeatedly threatened her with calls, videos, and even intimidation tactics involving a toy gun and gym dumbbells. Despite blocking 150-200 numbers, the harassment continued as the accused contacted her from different numbers. After she turned off her phone at the advice of police, the threats resumed once she reactivated it three months later.

The victim, a 30-year-old medical professional, had initially considered the marriage proposal after interacting with the boy's family through a community marriage bureau. However, during an in-person meeting in May 2024, she discovered the man was over 10 years older than expected, leading her family to politely decline the proposal.

Following the rejection, the accused began bombarding the victim and her family with calls. When the family confronted his relatives, their concerns were dismissed. Neighbors reported seeing him actively searching for the woman's address, and it was even said he rented a house in the area. Concerned for her safety, the victim sought help from the police but was met with little action, and it wasn't until she filed a complaint at Achole police station that a non-cognizable offence was registered.

The accused, who claimed his marriage proposal was canceled by the woman’s family and that he had suffered other setbacks, admitted to his actions but attributed them to superstition, claiming black magic was involved.

The police have taken preventive measures against him, issuing a bond with a warning not to repeat the actions, or else strict legal steps will be taken. Authorities confirmed the gun in the videos was a toy, but the victim continues to feel unsafe in her own home.
