BKC to Get Wider Roads, One-Way Traffic System to Tackle Congestion: MMRDA's Bold Move

Mumbai, 11th May 2025: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has unveiled a comprehensive traffic management strategy for the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), aimed at addressing the escalating traffic congestion caused by rapid growth in footfall, ongoing infrastructure projects, and diversion due to the Sion bridge closure. With over 6 lakh daily visitors and employees, BKC has been under immense pressure, particularly along the Bandra-Kurla Link Road. MMRDA's latest plan, approved in an authority meeting chaired by the MMRDA Chairman, proposes a two-pronged approach: converting underused cycle tracks into vehicular lanes and introducing a one-way traffic system in key BKC corridors.
Key Measures Announced:
Conversion of Cycle Tracks: Underutilized cycle tracks will be repurposed to widen roads from 2+2 to 3+3 lanes, increasing traffic capacity and reducing travel and waiting times significantly. The measure is expected to cut peak-hour travel time from 25 to 15 minutes and reduce CO₂ emissions by 30%. One-Way Traffic Implementation: To streamline internal movement, BKC will introduce a one-way traffic system. This move aims to reduce bottlenecks and ensure smoother vehicle flow, especially in high-traffic zones. An MMRDA official stated, “By expanding key roads and implementing one-way circulation, we're building a future-ready BKC that ensures faster, safer, and more efficient commuting.” The initiative is both a short-term solution and a long-term vision to accommodate the area's increasing development and transportation demands.
