Mumbai Metro 9 Set for Trial Runs This Week, Paving Way for Seamless Andheri-Mira Road Commute

Mumbai, May 12, 2025 :In a significant milestone for Mumbai’s expanding metro network, trial runs for Metro Line 9—an extension of the Red Line 7—are set to begin this week. The new corridor, which will connect Dahisar to Mira-Bhayandar, promises to dramatically enhance connectivity between Andheri and Mumbai’s northern suburbs.
The commencement of trial runs follows the successful energisation of the overhead traction system on Saturday, signaling readiness for full-scale dynamic testing. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is expected to inaugurate the trial phase, highlighting the project’s importance to regional connectivity and urban mobility.
Metro Line 9 spans 13.581 kilometers, including 11.386 km of elevated track and 2.195 km of underground sections. The project will eventually comprise 10 stations, with the first phase focusing on four key stations: Dahisar, Pandurang Wadi, Miragaon, and Kashigaon. The remaining stations—including Sai Baba Nagar, Meditiya Nagar, Shahid Bhagat Singh Garden, and Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium—will be operational in subsequent phases.
MMRDA Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee emphasized the authority’s phased commissioning strategy. “Instead of waiting for the completion of entire corridors, we are prioritizing sections that are ready. This allows us to deliver modern, sustainable transport solutions more rapidly,” he said.
A safety advisory issued last week urged the public to avoid the corridor between Dahisar and Kashigaon due to live 25,000-volt overhead wires, as dynamic testing of train movement, signalling, and communication systems begins in earnest.
Once fully operational, Metro Line 9 is expected to slash travel times by up to 75%, depending on road conditions. The line will serve as a crucial connector, linking the Western Express Highway, Western Railway, and existing metro lines 2A and 7, creating a robust and integrated transit network for Mumbai.
Kashimira station, located just 1.4 km from Mira Road’s suburban railway station, is set to become a key intermodal hub, further improving commuter access and convenience.
Projected to handle a daily ridership of 11.12 lakh by 2031, Metro Line 9 is a cornerstone of MMRDA’s vision for a faster, more efficient, and commuter-friendly transport system—bringing the city closer to its goal of “Mumbai in Minutes.”
