Watchdog Foundation Raises Alarm Over Poor Quality and Mismanagement in Mumbai Road Works

Mumbai, May 10:In a strongly worded letter addressed to civic authorities, the Watchdog Foundation has raised serious concerns over the ongoing road concretisation works in Mumbai, highlighting substandard quality, slow progress, and potential corruption in the execution of infrastructure projects.

The Foundation pointed to alarming conditions at two key locations — Nathalal Parekh Marg in South Mumbai and S.V. Road in Vile Parle — where road works are currently underway. According to their observations, the Nathalal Parekh Marg project is progressing at a “shockingly slow pace,” with only two labourers seen on-site. Moreover, the quality of cement concrete pipes and kerb stones being used was deemed substandard, raising questions about the durability and long-term safety of the newly built infrastructure.

At S.V. Road, Vile Parle, the concretisation of a narrow side strip along the main road is underway despite the presence of multiple underground utilities. The Foundation warned that poor planning in this stretch could result in repeated digging in the near future, causing wastage of public funds and inconvenience to commuters.

Citing past incidents such as the rapid deterioration of Bhargav Road in Santacruz, the Foundation emphasized that low-quality workmanship and materials are leading to premature road damage. “There is a growing perception of a nexus between certain contractors and civic officials,” the statement read, referencing a previous case where Rs 352 crore was allegedly misappropriated through subpar roadworks carried out in collusion with auditors and civic officials.

Calling the situation “systemic,” the Foundation demanded an immediate and comprehensive audit of the works being carried out at both Nathalal Parekh Marg and S.V. Road. They urged the civic leadership to investigate material standards, assess manpower deployment, and ensure strict adherence to deadlines.

“This not only undermines public trust but poses serious safety and financial risks,” the letter stated, urging a personal visit and swift corrective action from the concerned authorities to uphold the integrity of Mumbai’s infrastructure projects.
