Mumbai’s Green Revolution: Bakeries Get a Year to Ditch Firewood Ovens

BKC, Mumbai: In a bold move to combat pollution, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has set a one-year deadline for bakeries across Mumbai to phase out their firewood ovens and switch to more eco-friendly alternatives like electricity or piped natural gas (PNG). This new mandate affects around 650 bakeries, which have now been served notices instructing them to make the necessary changes within 12 months.

A BMC environment department official emphasized the importance of this decision, stating, “Burning wood in ovens is a significant contributor to pollution in Mumbai. Inspections have started, and wherever we find firewood usage, notices have been served.” The BMC is working closely with experts from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) to implement the transition smoothly.

According to a report by the Bombay Environmental Action Group (BEAG), over 47% of surveyed bakeries rely on firewood for baking. These bakeries primarily use cheap scrap wood from old furniture and dilapidated buildings, consuming up to 300 kg daily in larger operations. With firewood costing R4-5 per kg, compared to R10-12 for logwood, it's a cheaper option for many bakers, but its environmental cost has become undeniable.

The move by BMC is a step towards cleaner air and a more sustainable Mumbai, with bakeries given a realistic timeline to manage the transition.
