Mumbai Weather Update: City Braces for Moderate Rains; IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Konkan Region

Mumbai, August 29 : Mumbai woke up to overcast skies and scattered showers on Friday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast moderate to heavy rainfall for the city and surrounding regions. While Mumbai is expected to see intermittent showers through the day, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for all Konkan districts excluding Mumbai, warning of possible heavy rainfall at isolated locations.

Temperatures in Mumbai are expected to range between 26°C and 30°C, with rainfall expected to remain moderate and scattered through the weekend. Since Thursday morning, localities across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) have reported rainfall between 20 to 40 mm. Officials have stated that although the showers will continue until Monday, they are not expected to intensify significantly within city limits.

The Konkan region, including districts such as Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg, has been placed under a yellow alert, indicating chances of isolated heavy downpours. These areas are likely to see stronger monsoon activity through the next few days.

The IMD has also forecast continued rainfall in Palghar and Thane, with thunderstorms possible on Friday. The intensity may increase in Palghar on Monday, although no red or orange alerts have been issued yet.

According to weather experts, the renewed monsoon activity is driven by a low-pressure area that has developed over the southern Odisha coast and adjoining regions. This system, supported by cyclonic circulation and east-west wind patterns, has revived the monsoon currents along India’s western coastline, including Goa and the Konkan belt, after a brief lull earlier this week.

What To Expect Ahead

  • August 30–31: Mostly cloudy skies in Mumbai with moderate rain.

  • September 1–3: Similar conditions expected; no severe weather alerts issued.

  • Thane, Palghar: Moderate showers likely; residents advised to stay alert for sudden downpours.

Authorities have urged citizens in affected districts to stay updated through official bulletins and avoid venturing into flood-prone areas during heavy rainfall.
