3 Dead, 23 Hospitalised After Alleged Sewage Contamination in Drinking Water Near Chennai

Pallavaram, Tamil Nadu: Tragedy struck Pallavaram near Chennai as three people died, and 23 others were hospitalised after allegedly consuming sewage-contaminated drinking water on Thursday. Residents from Malaimedu, Mariamman Kovil Street, and Muthalamman Kovil Street were rushed to Chromepet Government General Hospital and a private facility after experiencing severe health complications.

Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian has ordered an investigation to confirm whether the drinking water supply was indeed compromised. Residents have been advised to avoid consuming piped water as authorities probe the incident.

Tamil Nadu Minister TM Anbarasan inspected the affected areas and arranged for a medical camp to provide immediate relief. He stated, “The investigation is ongoing to determine whether the water supply or consumed food caused the illnesses. If it were the water, the entire area would likely have been affected.”

Opposition leader Edappadi K Palaniswami criticised the ruling DMK government for failing to ensure safe drinking water, particularly in the aftermath of a recent cyclone. He condemned the government's "negligence" in safeguarding public health and urged immediate measures to secure the water supply.

BJP state president K Annamalai also questioned the government's response, accusing Minister Anbarasan of downplaying residents' concerns.

The incident has raised alarm over the safety of the area's water supply infrastructure, prompting calls for swift and thorough action to prevent future tragedies
