Ammonia Gas Leak Sparks Fire at Mahananda Dairy in Goregaon; Swift Response Averts Major Tragedy

Mumbai | July 24, 2025 : A massive fire and ammonia gas leak at Mahananda Dairy in Goregaon (East) triggered panic on Tuesday night, prompting an emergency response from multiple agencies. The incident occurred on July 23 around 9:12 pm, after a faulty valve on a 3,000-kilogram ammonia tank led to a dangerous leak inside a refrigeration unit on the dairy’s ground floor.
Upon detection, fire brigade units, Mumbai Police, and HAZMAT teams rushed to the spot. As a safety measure, the plant’s electrical supply was immediately disconnected to prevent ignition. The refrigeration unit, spread across approximately 2,000 sq. ft., was quickly cordoned off.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus kits successfully sealed off 15 to 16 valves to contain the leak, while HAZMAT personnel in chemical suits used special sealant to stop the leakage from the faulty valve. To neutralise the escaping gas, officials deployed three high-pressure first-aid lines and a hose line powered by a four-motor pump.
According to a Times of India report, around 15–20 kg of residual ammonia mixed with Prizol 68 lubricant oil was safely transferred to another storage tank. The prompt coordination between emergency responders is being credited for averting a larger disaster, especially given the hazardous nature of ammonia gas.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and all workers were evacuated safely. However, the cause of the valve failure remains under investigation. Authorities are also assessing whether there are any long-term risks or safety lapses at the facility.
Further updates are awaited as the inquiry continues.
