BCCI's Bold Move: Domestic Cricket Now Key to National Selection

Mumbai, India: In a significant policy shift, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has mandated that all players must participate in domestic tournaments to be eligible for national team selection and central contracts. This move is aimed at reinforcing the domestic cricket structure, ensuring that players remain match-fit, and contributing to the development of young talent.

According to a BCCI document, senior players will now be expected to play in prestigious events like the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. This policy is designed to inspire younger cricketers by allowing them the opportunity to play alongside some of the best in the country. Only exceptional circumstances will grant players an exemption, with the Selection Committee Chairman’s approval.

The decision comes after mounting criticism of India’s recent series losses to New Zealand and Australia, where players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli struggled with form. While Rohit has begun participating in practice sessions ahead of the Ranji Trophy, Kohli has yet to announce his availability. However, players like Rishabh Pant, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shubman Gill have already confirmed their participation, signaling an important shift in attitude.

Legends like Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri, and coach Gautam Gambhir have long emphasized the importance of domestic cricket for preserving player form. The BCCI’s move to make domestic participation mandatory is an effort to strengthen the pipeline of talent and maintain India's dominance in world cricket.
