Bhubaneswar and Cuttack Report Decline in Major Crimes Amid Overall Increase

Bhubaneswar, India: Despite a rise in overall crime cases, Bhubaneswar and Cuttack have experienced a significant decline in major crimes, according to recent data from the commissionerate police.

As of November 30, 2024, a total of 20,019 criminal cases were reported in the twin cities, up from 17,675 cases during the same period last year. This increase is attributed to the adoption of free crime registration policies, encouraging more residents to report incidents. However, major offenses such as murder, dacoity, robbery, burglary, theft, rioting, rape, and crimes against women have declined.

  • Bhubaneswar: The urban police district registered 13,411 cases this year compared to 10,873 cases in 2023.

  • Cuttack: The city saw a slight reduction in overall cases, recording 6,608 incidents in 2024 as opposed to 6,802 the previous year.

Police officials attribute the decline in major crimes to proactive measures implemented over the past year, including community policing initiatives, increased patrolling, and rapid action against offenders. The commissionerate emphasizes the importance of maintaining these strategies to continue enhancing safety in both cities.

In response to the growing number of reported incidents, police authorities have urged citizens to report crimes without fear, stressing that timely reporting plays a crucial role in the investigation process. While the rise in reported cases may suggest a surge in crime, police believe that a more open and responsive approach to crime registration has led to more accurate data and greater transparency.

The trend of declining major crimes, despite the increase in total cases, reflects the city’s continued focus on improving public safety through effective law enforcement measures and community involvement.
