BMC Denies Social Media Rumours of Unfiltered Water Supply in Mumbai

Mumbai : The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday dismissed widespread rumours on social media suggesting that unfiltered or contaminated water was being supplied across Mumbai. In an official statement issued on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the BMC categorically stated that these claims are "entirely false and baseless."
The clarification came in response to misleading messages being circulated online, falsely alleging a breakdown in one of the city’s water purification plants. The messages raised concerns among residents about potential health risks, prompting the civic body to issue a swift rebuttal.
“It has come to our notice that misleading messages are being circulated on social media, falsely claiming that water is being supplied without filtration due to a breakdown in the water purification plant. These claims are entirely false,” the BMC stated in its post.
Officials from the BMC confirmed that there has been no malfunction or operational issue at any of the city’s water treatment plants. They emphasized that Mumbai’s water supply is functioning smoothly, and that clean, disinfected, and fully treated water is being delivered across all regions of the city.
The civic body also reassured Mumbaikars that regular quality checks and strict purification protocols are being strictly followed to ensure public safety. "We continue to maintain the highest standards of water treatment to safeguard the health of our citizens," said a senior BMC official.
In addition, the BMC urged citizens to exercise caution on digital platforms and refrain from spreading unverified information. “Please do not believe or forward such rumours. Always verify any information before sharing it on social media,” the statement added.
The BMC has been proactive in countering misinformation and has appealed to the public to rely only on official communication channels for accurate and timely updates regarding civic services. The civic body also reminded citizens that false alarms can create unnecessary panic and distrust, and therefore, should be strictly avoided.
As concerns about misinformation grow in the digital age, the BMC’s prompt response aims to prevent unwarranted fear and maintain public trust in the city’s essential services.
