BMC Explores New Revenue Streams Amid ₹1.93 Lakh Crore Liabilities

Mumbai: Facing a massive financial commitment of ₹1.93 lakh crore for ongoing and upcoming projects over the next five to six years, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is exploring new revenue streams. With only ₹39,543.64 crore available for infrastructure development from its total fixed deposits of ₹81,774.43 crore, the civic body is looking at legal options to introduce additional charges.

For the 2025-26 financial year, 23% of BMC’s estimated revenue will come from fixed deposit withdrawals, while 58% will be generated from annual income. To bridge the gap, BMC plans to introduce charges on solid waste collection, property tax on commercial slum properties, and water and sewage charges for unmetered residences below 500 sq ft

Civic chief Bhushan Gagrani emphasized the need for new revenue sources, stating that property tax is already waived for residences up to 500 sq ft, but water and sewage charges must still be collected. These measures are expected to generate an additional ₹2,000 crore.

BMC is also awaiting a decision on the long-pending revision of property tax and water charges.
