Sleepless in SoBo: Film Shoots Disrupt Grant Road Residents

Grant Road, Mumbai: Residents of Pannalal Terrace, Grant Road, are facing severe disturbances due to frequent film and television shoots at a defunct municipal school adjacent to their building. They complain about the noise from generator vans, early morning shoots, and late-night dismantling of sets, making peaceful living nearly impossible.
According to residents, around three shoots, each lasting a week, take place every month. Bharti Chauhan, one of the affected residents, said, "Shooting starts at 6:30 am and sometimes continues till 3 am. The loud noises and generator fumes have made life unbearable."
Chandrika Nandu, another resident, highlighted the health hazards, saying, "The generators run at least 18 hours a day, releasing diesel fumes. My husband developed a chronic cough due to this." Long-time resident Shobana Desai added that post-COVID, the frequency of shoots has increased, worsening the problem. "The noise from megaphones, heavy vehicles, and set constructions has made it impossible to sleep peacefully."
Pranav Damle, another resident, pointed out that ever since the film Raees was shot here, the location has become a preferred spot for filmmakers. "We demand restrictions on generator vans, regulated shooting hours, and noise control measures at night." Harsh Chauhan suggested installing an electricity meter to reduce generator use.
BMC officials acknowledged the complaints. Education Officer Rajesh Kankal confirmed they are working on solutions, while Deputy Municipal Commissioner Prachi Jambhekar stated that a permanent reservation for shooting has not been made. "We are addressing concerns and planning to install an electric box."
Sharad Ugade, assistant municipal commissioner of D Ward, mentioned that shooting permits are granted through an online portal. DB Marg Police confirmed that while BMC grants permissions, they take action when complaints about post-10 pm noise violations are reported.
Dr. Subhas Salunke, former director of Public Health Services, Maharashtra, warned about the severe health risks of sleep deprivation, including increased disease susceptibility and even psychosis.
Residents continue to push for stricter regulations to reclaim their peace from the relentless film shoots disrupting their lives.
