BMC to Tackle Traffic Woes by Widening WEH at Goregaon

Goregaon, Western Express Highway, Mumbai: In a significant move to address the long-standing traffic issues at the Goregaon stretch of Western Express Highway (WEH), the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will begin widening a crucial choke point. This 300-400 meter stretch, running from Mohan Gokhale Road to Aarey Check Naka, will expand from 45 meters to 57-61 meters. The BMC's effort involves removing around 300 illegal structures, including tea shops, garages, and showrooms, that have long obstructed the highway and the service road.
The initiative will also clear two water culverts blocking the road. The service road for Doodh Sagar Society will continue to function after the widening, slated for completion within three months. This decision aligns with BMC’s Removal of Bottleneck Policy, a strategy that offers compensation to residents instead of relocation, which was successfully applied during the S V Road expansion from Goregaon to Kandivli.
After pursuing this issue for over 15 years, local MP Ravindra Waikar expressed relief at the move, which aims to mitigate congestion caused by frequent tourist bus parking and the illegal structures. This widening effort marks a new chapter in addressing Mumbai's ever-growing traffic challenges.
