Bridging the Gap: Gokhale and Carnac Projects Race Against Time

Andheri & Masjid Bunder, Mumbai : The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has intensified efforts to meet deadlines for two critical bridge projects, the Gopal Krishna Gokhale Bridge in Andheri West and the historic Carnac Bridge near Masjid Bunder.
On Wednesday, the BMC began launching girders for the approach road to the Gokhale Bridge. Originally scheduled for December 2024, progress faced setbacks due to delays in levelling the railway portion, completed only in late December 2024. The corporation plans to finish launching all girders by mid-February 2025, aiming for the bridge's final completion by March 2025.
The Gokhale Bridge’s two lanes, restricted to light vehicles, have been operational since February 26, 2024, but remain off-limits to buses.
Meanwhile, at Masjid Bunder, the trial run for a 9.30-metre girder relocation on the 154-year-old Carnac Bridge was a success, with 60 metres pending. Major operations hinge on a Central Railway mega block approval for launching the girder over the railway portion. This complex process, requiring expert assistance, is key to achieving the completion target of June 5, 2025.
Key Deadlines:
-
Mid-February 2025: Girders to be fully launched for Gokhale Bridge approach road.
-
March 2025: Completion of Gokhale Bridge.
-
June 5, 2025: Completion of Carnac Bridge.
