CM Fadnavis Highlights Modi's Plan for Mumbai's Third Airport at Vadhavan Port

Mumbai - At the CNBC-TV18 India Business Leader Awards on Saturday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis highlighted the transformative potential of the Vadhavan Port, which is set to become one of India's largest ports. He emphasized that the port, located in Palghar, Maharashtra, will play a key role in revolutionizing the country’s maritime economy. Fadnavis also drew attention to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's plan to develop Mumbai's third airport at the Vadhavan Port, further boosting its significance as a major transportation hub.
In August 2024, Prime Minister Modi had laid the foundation stone for the ₹76,000 crore Vadhavan Port project. Situated about 97 kilometers from Mumbai in the coastal Palghar district, the port is expected to become one of the top 10 ports in the world upon completion, with a handling capacity of 23.2 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs). The district, which spans from Vasai-Virar to Dahanu and borders Gujarat, is anticipated to undergo significant infrastructure development. Vadhavan Port will feature deeper drafts to accommodate ultra-large cargo ships and provide direct connectivity to international shipping routes, reducing transit times and costs.
Beyond its impact on maritime trade, the Vadhavan Port project is expected to generate substantial employment, stimulate local businesses, and drive regional economic growth. The development of Mumbai's third airport at the same location will further enhance the region's connectivity and bolster India's global trade position.
