Congress Demands Full Term for Dalit Mayor in Delhi, Boycotts Mayor Polls Voting

Delhi: The Delhi Congress has announced that it will boycott the mayoral election voting scheduled for today, demanding that the newly elected mayor, a Dalit candidate, be allowed to serve a full one-year term. The party's demand comes amid concerns over the truncated tenure of the mayoral position, which is currently set to end in April next year. In a statement, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Choudhary emphasized that the party is seeking a full term for the Dalit candidate, who was expected to hold the post for a complete year. He criticized the BJP-led municipal corporation for allegedly undermining the spirit of equal representation and fair governance by shortening the term. The issue has stirred political tensions, as the mayoral elections in Delhi have often been mired in controversy.
The Delhi municipal corporation, which is currently under BJP control, had earlier announced that the newly elected mayor will only serve a partial term due to changes in election timelines. The Congress’s boycott of the voting process reflects its broader opposition to the BJP's handling of the mayoral election. The party has also called for greater transparency in the election process, demanding that all future mayoral terms be clearly defined without arbitrary changes in duration. Stated "We are committed to ensuring that the Dalit candidate is given the opportunity to serve a full term, as promised by the party." As the controversy continues to unfold, all eyes are now on the outcome of the mayoral elections, which will determine the leadership of the Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) for the coming months. The BJP has yet to respond directly to Congress’s demands, but sources within the party suggest that they will proceed with the election as planned, without any changes to the current schedule.
