End of an Era: Microsoft to Shut Down Skype on May 5

Redmond, USA: Microsoft has officially announced that Skype will be discontinued on May 5, 2025, as the company shifts its focus to Microsoft Teams. Users are urged to migrate their data to Teams before the shutdown.
In a blog post, Microsoft stated, "We are retiring Skype to streamline our free consumer communications offerings and focus on Microsoft Teams (free), our modern communications and collaboration hub." The transition from Skype to Teams has been in progress for months, with Microsoft highlighting that Teams offers similar features, along with additional capabilities like meetings, calendar management, and community functions.
Smooth Transition for Skype Users
-
Skype users can log in to Teams using their existing credentials, ensuring chats and contacts transfer automatically.
-
During the transition, Skype and Teams users can communicate seamlessly with each other.
-
Users who prefer not to migrate can export their Skype data, including chats, contacts, and call history.
Additionally, Skype Credit and calling subscriptions will be discontinued for new users. However, existing subscribers can use their credit and plans until their next renewal. After May 5, paid users can still access Skype Dial Pad via the Skype web portal or within Teams.
Microsoft's decision marks the end of an era for Skype, which has been a household name in online communication for years.
