Frequent Bus Route Changes Frustrate Mumbai Commuters

Mumbai: Mumbai’s commuters are facing mounting frustration as the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking frequently diverts bus routes for reasons many consider minor. Causes cited include pedestrian crowds, roadworks, political rallies, religious processions, metro construction, and even VIP movements.

On Thursday, Route No. 307 in Bhandup was diverted via LBS Marg due to ongoing BMC roadwork. Similarly, on Wednesday, Route A-118 was curtailed at Kabutar Khana, Dadar, owing to pedestrian congestion on M.C. Jawale Marg. Last weekend, several routes near Dadar East station were diverted during a VIP visit amidst the Hanuman temple demolition controversy.

Activists and commuters are outraged. "If pedestrian crowds are a reason today, then by BEST's logic, services near CSMT should stop too," said Arindam Mahapatra, a transport advocate. Vidyadhar Date of AMAB highlighted other flaws, such as missing destination boards, especially in Bandra, making buses hard to navigate.

BEST officials defended the diversions, claiming they follow directives from agencies and aim to minimize commuter inconvenience. Updates are reportedly shared via social media channels, though passengers feel otherwise.

This ongoing issue adds to existing complaints of route shortages and sudden terminations, leaving thousands stranded regularly. Will BEST address these concerns, or will Mumbai’s commuters continue to bear the brunt of frequent disruptions?
