Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road Flyover's Polymer Rumblers Fail After Just Three Years

Ghatkopar, Mumbai: The Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road (GMLR) flyover, inaugurated by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in August 2021, is facing safety concerns due to the deterioration of its 12 polymer rumblers. Installed to reduce speed, the rumblers have been damaged within just three years, with exposed screws now posing a risk to vehicles, particularly two-wheelers.
Despite the flyover’s construction at a cost of ₹500 crore to ease traffic congestion, the structure has faced issues since its opening, including thefts of stud posts and crash barriers. The damage to the rumblers has raised alarms among commuters and local residents, including Faiyaz Alam Shaikh, who expressed concerns about accidents due to the exposed screws.
A former BMC official suggested that polymer rumblers may not be durable, leading to maintenance issues. In response, BMC’s additional municipal commissioner, Abhijit Bangar, assured that the rumblers will be replaced immediately.
The situation highlights the need for more durable materials and regular maintenance in infrastructure projects. If negligence is found in maintenance or installation, those responsible could face legal consequences under the Indian Penal Code for endangering public safety.
