Govt Slams Ola, Uber Over Alleged Fare Discrimination Based on Phones

New Delhi : The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has issued notices to ride-hailing giants Ola and Uber over allegations of "differential pricing" based on the type of smartphone used by consumers. Reports claim users were charged different fares for identical rides booked via Android and iOS devices.

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) is probing the matter after complaints surfaced on social media, with a Delhi-based entrepreneur highlighting apparent fare discrepancies. While Uber has denied customizing prices based on mobile phone models, it attributed variations to factors like pick-up points, estimated time of arrival, and drop-off locations. However, several users continue to allege pricing biases.

Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Pralhad Joshi, ordered a detailed investigation into Ola, Uber, and Rapido, emphasizing a “zero tolerance for consumer exploitation.” The CCPA's intervention seeks transparency and fairness in fare calculations, with the ministry promising swift action against any unfair trade practices.

This development underscores growing consumer concerns over transparency in app-based services.
