Shimla, July 1:Torrential rains continue to batter Himachal Pradesh, severely disrupting daily life and causing widespread damage across several districts. As of Tuesday, the death toll from rain-related incidents has risen to 17, while rescue and relief operations are underway.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the state, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in the coming days. The Mandi district has emerged as the worst affected, with over 139 roads blocked and 314 power transformers damaged. Flash floods in Syanj swept away a house, leaving seven people missing, while a cloudburst in Kasong claimed one life.
According to the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA), a total of 259 roads remain blocked, 614 power distribution transformers (DTRs) are out of service, and 130 water supply schemes are disrupted across the state. The Beas River, particularly in Mandi, is flowing above the danger mark, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying areas.
District-wise, Sirmaur reported 92 water supply schemes affected, with major disruptions in Nohradhar (19) and Pachhad (16). In Kullu, 20 roads are blocked, and 47 water supply schemes have been affected in the Kullu, Largi, and Anni subdivisions. Lahaul and Spiti reported a severe electrical infrastructure impact, with 139 transformers damaged in Spiti alone.
The Chandigarh-Manali National Highway has also been disrupted, halting traffic and stranding commuters. Authorities have urged residents and tourists to avoid travel in vulnerable regions and stay indoors.
Earlier, the IMD had issued an orange alert for Kangra, Mandi, Sirmaur, and Shimla, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations. With monsoon activity intensifying, the state government is on high alert and has deployed teams for immediate relief and restoration.
Public safety remains the top priority, and residents are advised to follow updates from official sources.
