HMPV Virus in Maharashtra: Govt. on High Alert, But No Cause for Panic

Maharashtra: Maharashtra is on alert following reports of the HMPV virus spreading to neighboring states. However, the government has assured the public that there is no need for panic, as the infection is treatable. State Health Minister Hasan Mushrif and Public Health Minister Prakash Abitkar confirmed the situation on Tuesday, saying the virus has affected five people in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat, but no fatalities have been reported so far.

Two suspected cases were identified in Nagpur, and blood samples have been sent to Pune for further testing. The state’s medical colleges and government hospitals are on high alert. While children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions must remain cautious, both ministers emphasized that the infection is not severe.

Mushrif also confirmed that there’s no need for masks or quarantines at this stage. The health department has urged the public to take basic precautions such as covering their mouth when coughing, washing hands, and using sanitizers.

The state is preparing isolation wards and essential medications at medical facilities should cases rise. "We will manage the situation effectively," Mushrif said, assuring residents that the virus, though contagious, does not pose a severe threat to life.
