Thane Court Sentences Rapist to 10 Years for Assault on Mentally Challenged Woman

Naupada, Thane, Maharashtra.: A Thane court has sentenced a security guard to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for the brutal rape of a 64-year-old mentally challenged woman in 2021. The accused, Mohammad Guddu alias Dilkash Mohammad Habibulla Shaikh, was also fined ₹65,000, which will be paid to the victim’s brother.

The crime occurred on November 4, 2021, when the accused, pretending to ask for drinking water, entered the victim’s home in Naupada while she was alone. He assaulted her, gagged her, and raped her before fleeing the scene. When her brother returned home, he found her unable to speak and took her to a doctor, where the assault was confirmed. Sadly, the victim passed away before the trial began.

Additional public prosecutor Sandhya H. Mhatre highlighted that the victim had a cognitive disability, which made it difficult for her to explain the assault. The court, after examining nine witnesses during the trial, ensured justice was served to the deceased victim.

This case stands as a reminder of the importance of securing justice for vulnerable individuals, even posthumously.
