Pawar Backs Ladki Bahin, But Mahayuti's Women’s Safety Track Record Comes Under Scrutiny

Nashik: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Sharad Pawar has launched a scathing attack on the Mahayuti government, accusing it of failing to protect women amidst an alarming rise in crimes against them.

Speaking at a public rally in Nashik on Monday, Pawar expressed concern over the increasing incidents of gender-based violence and safety issues under the current state administration. Pawar’s remarks come at a time when the state government has introduced the ‘Ladki Bahin’ scheme, which provides Rs 1,500 per month to eligible women as financial assistance. While the initiative aims to empower women economically, Pawar criticized it as a “band-aid solution” to deeper systemic issues related to women’s safety.

“In the first eight months of the Mahayuti government’s rule, Maharashtra has witnessed 900 incidents of crimes against women. This includes cases of rape, molestation, and domestic violence. The government has failed to protect our women, and instead of focusing on meaningful solutions, it continues to offer financial handouts that do nothing to address the root cause of the problem,” Pawar stated.

However, Pawar’s criticism has struck a chord with many in the opposition and women’s rights groups, who argue that these measures are insufficient in tackling the rising number of violence against women across the state. As the elections draw closer, women’s safety has emerged as a major talking point, and both political parties are likely to face increased scrutiny over their policies and actions in this critical area.
