Maharashtra Govt to Build Memorial for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Agra

Agra, February 20, 2025 – In a historic move, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced plans to construct a grand memorial for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Agra, marking a significant step in honoring the Maratha king's legacy. CM Fadnavis made the announcement during a program held in Agra on the occasion of the 395th birth anniversary of the revered warrior king. The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) issued a statement highlighting that the memorial would be built at Meena Bazaar, a location where Shivaji Maharaj was once imprisoned.
Addressing the gathering, CM Fadnavis revealed that the Maharashtra government would acquire land in Agra to establish the monumental tribute. He assured that he would personally discuss the plans with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to expedite the process. The proposed memorial will stand as a symbol of Shivaji Maharaj's indomitable spirit and will become an important landmark in the region.
"We will erect a grand monument at the Agra Kothi (now known as Meena Bazaar) where Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was held captive. The Maharashtra government will take the necessary steps to acquire the land for this project. This will be a magnificent tribute to the great warrior," CM Fadnavis stated.
The announcement comes after CM Fadnavis, along with Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, attended the 395th birth anniversary celebrations of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Shivneri Fort in Junnar, Maharashtra. In his speech, CM Fadnavis expressed his commitment to preserving and developing Shivaji Maharaj's forts across Maharashtra, vowing to remove encroachments and ensure their protection.
"The forts of Shivaji Maharaj are not just historical landmarks, but symbols of his legacy as a warrior and an able administrator. We will continue to develop these forts and protect them from encroachment," CM Fadnavis added.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also spoke about the efforts to have 12 of Shivaji Maharaj's forts included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, with Shivneri Fort being one of the contenders. He emphasized that the celebration of Shivaji Maharaj's birth anniversary is not only a local event but a global occasion, with celebrations held in various countries, including Uttar Pradesh's Agra.
"We pledge our dedication to the development of Maharashtra, inspired by the legacy of Shivaji Maharaj," Shinde said. "The recognition of these forts on the UNESCO list is part of our continued efforts to preserve Maharashtra's rich history."
Deputy CM Ajit Pawar highlighted Shivaji Maharaj's legacy, emphasizing his influence on governance, social justice, and the cultural fabric of India. "Shivaji Maharaj's ideals of good governance continue to inspire us today. We are committed to ensuring that no resources are spared in the development of his forts," Pawar remarked.
Shivaji Maharaj, born on February 19, 1630, at Shivneri Fort, is regarded as one of India's greatest warriors and a visionary leader who established the Maratha Empire. His administration and military strategy have left a lasting impact on Indian history.
The proposed memorial in Agra is part of a broader initiative to honor Shivaji Maharaj's contribution to the restoration and consolidation of the Maratha Empire and to celebrate his extensive legacy that continues to inspire generations.
