Mira-Bhayandar: MBMC Releases First-Year Innovation Cell Report Highlighting ₹7.12 Crore Savings, ₹12.5 Crore Awards, NITI Aayog Recognition

February 20, 2025, Mira Bhayandar – The Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has officially released its first-year report on the Innovation Cell (IC), shedding light on its success and highlighting key achievements since its establishment on February 1, 2024. The 22-member cell, formed in alignment with the government’s “Innovative City and Start-Up” programme, has been instrumental in streamlining daily operations and enhancing the civic administration's ability to engage with citizens and implement new initiatives effectively.

The IC was constituted with administrative approval after a resolution was tabled last year. Since its inception, the IC has played a crucial role in driving research, policy making, and implementing over 20 major campaigns, including Swachh Bharat Mission, Garbage Free City, My Vasundhara Mission, and Jal Shakti Mission, among others. These initiatives have garnered awards, generating a significant ₹12.5 crore in monetary prizes for the civic treasury.

In addition to securing funds through awards, the Innovation Cell independently raised ₹45 lakh through corporate social responsibility (CSR) contributions, further contributing to the city’s development projects.

The MBMC report also highlighted a substantial ₹7.12 crore in savings attributed to the IC’s role in consolidating and streamlining project management. Prior to the establishment of the IC, the MBMC hired various consultants for preparing development project reports (DPRs). The IC's centralization of these efforts has not only reduced costs but also increased transparency and improved execution.

Key initiatives developed by the Innovation Cell include Home@20, Flood-Free City, Skill Centres, and Employability@18, all designed to empower residents and enhance local opportunities. Furthermore, the IC has been integral in supporting campaigns like the National Clean Air Programme and Safai Mitra Suraksha Challenge, ensuring a cleaner and safer environment for the citizens of Mira-Bhayandar.

A standout achievement for the Innovation Cell was the recognition and support received from the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog. The central government body praised the IC’s innovative initiative, Faraal Sakhi (Snacks Friend), which aims to empower women entrepreneurs in the twin city of Mira-Bhayandar. This initiative has not only garnered local support but also positioned the IC as a model of innovation in urban governance.

The IC's effectiveness is underscored by its alignment with MBMC’s broader objectives of cost optimization, sustainability, and improved service delivery. The cell has fostered enhanced problem-solving, citizen-centric solutions, and better utilization of technology, making it a cornerstone of the city's growth strategy.

MBMC officials stated that, due to the Innovation Cell’s continuous evaluation and monitoring, the corporation has successfully identified areas for improvement and developed cost-efficient methods of operation. As part of its broader mandate, the IC also engages with local communities and promotes talent development, adaptability to change, and investment attraction.

In conclusion, the MBMC's Innovation Cell has made a significant impact in just its first year, earning recognition from government agencies and positioning the city as a leader in civic innovation and sustainable urban development. The report also highlights the cell’s role in ensuring improved service quality and fostering a culture of innovation in Mira-Bhayandar, making it a model for other cities to emulate.
