Uttarakhand: 68 Missing in Dharali Disaster, Including 24 Nepali Nationals; Rescue Ops Ongoing

Uttarkashi | August 12, 2025: The Uttarakhand district administration has released a list of 68 missing individuals following the catastrophic flash floods and landslides that struck the Dharali region of Uttarkashi and Pauri Garhwal districts on August 5 and 6. The missing include 24 Nepali nationals and 44 Indian citizens, according to the latest official update.

The disaster, triggered by a cloudburst near the Kheer Ganga river, has left a trail of destruction, claiming at least five lives and displacing hundreds. Over 1,308 people have been rescued since the calamity began. Several homes, hotels, and a centuries-old temple have been washed away in the floods, while continuous rainfall and road blockages continue to hamper rescue efforts.

Search operations are underway, led by experts from the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI). Helicopters have been deployed to reach stranded individuals, as roads leading to Dharali remain inaccessible due to heavy debris and landslides.

Earlier this week, financial assistance of ₹5 lakh was disbursed to families affected by the disaster, following instructions from the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand.

Meanwhile, the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA) has issued a statewide weather advisory, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in the coming days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed multiple districts under red, orange, and yellow alerts, prompting heightened preparedness across the state.

Authorities have urged residents and tourists to stay alert, avoid travel to high-risk zones, and follow all safety advisories strictly.
