Drunk Army Officer Rams Car Into Crowd in Nagpur; 30 Injured, Thrashed by Locals

Nagpur | August 4, 2025: A shocking incident unfolded near Durga Chowk in Nagardhan, Nagpur, on Sunday evening when a reportedly drunk Army officer rammed his car into a crowd, injuring around 25 to 30 people. The accused, identified as 40-year-old Harshpal Mahadev Waghmare, is a serving officer in the Indian Army currently posted in Assam. He was on a four-day leave and visiting Maharashtra at the time of the incident.
According to eyewitnesses and police officials, Waghmare was driving towards Hamlapuri around 8:30 p.m. when he allegedly lost control of the vehicle due to intoxication. Witnesses reported the vehicle being driven recklessly just moments before it careened off the road and struck a large group of pedestrians.
The impact caused widespread panic as the speeding vehicle injured several people before overturning and falling into a roadside drain. Infuriated locals quickly pulled the officer out of the drain. Disturbing visuals from the scene show Waghmare with blood on his face, struggling to move through the enraged crowd before being physically assaulted by bystanders.
Police from Ramtek station arrived promptly at the scene, intervened to rescue the officer from the crowd, and took him into custody. He was later transported to a nearby hospital for medical examination. An FIR has been registered, and further investigation is currently underway.
Authorities are working to identify all the injured victims and provide necessary medical assistance. Officials have confirmed that action will be taken as per legal procedures following the completion of medical and forensic evaluations.
