India Stands Ready for the Legal Return of Undocumented Citizens Abroad, Says S. Jaishankar

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reaffirmed India's position on the lawful return of undocumented Indian citizens living abroad, underscoring that the government remains committed to facilitating legal mobility. Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Jaishankar emphasized India's stance on migration, particularly in relation to deportations from the US.
"We've always supported legal mobility and are committed to providing opportunities for Indian talent globally. However, we firmly oppose illegal migration," said Jaishankar. He also explained that the Indian government is in the process of verifying the status of those facing deportation from the US, with estimates of the total number still uncertain.
Jaishankar highlighted the negative consequences of illegal migration, noting that "when illegal activities occur, they often lead to other unlawful activities, which harm the country's reputation." While addressing the ongoing US-India discussions about deporting approximately 180,000 undocumented Indians, the minister confirmed that India's position is clear: any undocumented Indians confirmed to be citizens will be welcomed back, as long as their return is legitimate.
The minister further stressed that such principles extend beyond the US and reiterated India's commitment to facilitating "legal and mutually beneficial mobility" in bilateral relationships. He raised concerns about the lengthy visa waiting periods, emphasizing that such delays do not serve the interests of either country. Jaishankar also emphasized that final numbers on deportation would only be available once individuals' citizenship status is verified.
India’s openness to the legal return of its citizens aligns with the country’s efforts to preserve its reputation and bolster its economic footprint on the global stage.
