Indian Police Seek Starlink's Help in Major Drug Haul Case

Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Police in India have reached out to Elon Musk's Starlink for information after discovering that drug smugglers were using the company's satellite internet device to navigate Indian waters. The Indian Coast Guard recently seized a boat near the Andaman and Nicobar islands, which was carrying 6,000kg of methamphetamine, valued at $4.25bn.

The boat, which originated in Myanmar, had been using Starlink’s mini device to establish a Wi-Fi hotspot during the journey.

Starlink, which has faced regulatory challenges in India, is not yet authorized to provide services in Indian waters. Authorities have arrested six Myanmar nationals involved in the operation. The police are investigating the device’s purchase and usage details, and have written to Starlink for further information.

This significant drug bust has raised concerns about the illegal use of satellite technology for criminal activities.
