Kerala on High Alert: IMD Issues Yellow Warning for Heavy Showers

New Delhi : The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heavy showers in some districts of Kerala for October 26 and 27. The southern state has been experiencing heavy rainfall for the last three days due to the impact of Cyclone Dana in the Bay of Bengal. In its latest press release, the weather department stated that there will be light to moderate rainfall accompanied by isolated thunderstorms and lightning in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, and Lakshadweep over the next two days. However, these weather conditions are expected to improve after that. The IMD also warned of the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall in Kerala and Mahe until October 27.

This is due to a cyclonic circulation over the Southeast Arabian Sea off the coast of south Kerala, as mentioned in IMD's weather update on October 25. Currently, eight districts in Kerala are on a yellow alert: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, and Thrissur. The alert has been downgraded from orange to yellow since Friday. However, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, and Alappuzha districts will continue to remain on a yellow alert for October 27.

Fishermen have also been warned against venturing out into the sea as squally weather with wind speeds of 35-45 kmph (gusting up to 55 kmph) is expected along and off the coast of Kerala.
