Kolkata:Tension escalated at Sagar Dutta Medical College Hospital on Friday night following the death of a patient. Allegedly, family members of the deceased patient attacked junior doctors on the hospital's fourth floor. In protest against this attack, the doctors have initiated a strike demanding better security.
Several representatives from the West Bengal Junior Doctors' Front (WBJDF), including well-known faces like Kinjal Nand and Debashish Haldar, arrived at the hospital on Friday night. They condemned the incident and announced that junior doctors at Sagar Dutta Hospital had gone on strike. Kinjal stated that the course of action for junior doctors at other hospitals would be decided in a general body meeting.
Reports indicate that a seriously ill patient was admitted to Sagar Dutta Hospital on Friday night. Suddenly, around 20-25 relatives of the patient reached the fourth floor and began attacking the junior doctors present there. Female doctors were pulled from their rooms and beaten, and there was vandalism in the women's ward. Police arrived at the scene but struggled to control the situation. Seven individuals were injured in the attack, including junior doctors, nurses, and a police officer.
Following the incident, a complaint was filed with the police, and four individuals have been arrested. Kinjal Nand stated that while a critically ill patient was being admitted, the relatives unexpectedly attacked the doctors on the fourth floor. They should question the hospital's lack of security. It is unfortunate that such a significant incident occurred despite the inadequate safety measures in hospitals.
Kinjal emphasized the issue of security, saying, "The administration claims to have taken steps, but how did the attack on doctors happen? How did outsiders gain access to the women's ward? The incident at R.G. Kar also occurred due to a lack of security, so why are such events still happening?"
It is noteworthy that the WBJDF has been protesting since August 9 after an attack on a female doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College. Although the strike was partially suspended after 42 days, the junior doctors' movement is still ongoing.
