Kolkata Student Gangrape Case: College Security Guard Arrested; Fourth Accused in Custody

Kolkata, June 28: In a disturbing development in the alleged gangrape of a 24-year-old first-year student at a prominent Kolkata law college, the city police have arrested a security guard posted at the institution. This is the fourth arrest in the case, which has shocked the city and sparked calls for urgent reforms in campus safety.

The arrest was made on Saturday, following ongoing investigations into the horrific incident that reportedly took place within the college premises. According to police sources, the security guard is believed to have either been complicit in the crime or failed in his duty to prevent it.

Earlier, three individuals — including students — had already been taken into custody in connection with the case. The latest arrest adds a serious dimension to the investigation, raising concerns about the involvement of campus staff in the incident or negligence in ensuring student safety.

The 24-year-old victim, a first-year law student, had reportedly filed a complaint detailing the brutal assault. Following her statement, medical examination and initial inquiry, the police launched an investigation that quickly led to multiple arrests.

“We are taking this case very seriously. No one will be spared, and we are determined to bring all those involved to justice,” a senior officer of the Kolkata Police said.

Meanwhile, student groups and activists have held demonstrations outside the college, demanding swift justice for the survivor and stringent action against the accused. Many have also criticized the college administration for lapses in campus security and delayed response to the survivor’s complaint.

The survivor is currently receiving medical and psychological support. Authorities have assured that all efforts are being made to ensure her safety and well-being.

As the investigation progresses, police have not ruled out further arrests. The case continues to draw widespread attention and condemnation, with civil society demanding systemic changes to prevent such incidents in educational institutions.
