In a tragic turn of events, the academic community in Kolkata was left shaken after the untimely death of 44-year-old Jadavpur University professor, Dr. Mainak Pal. The esteemed professor, who was on a short trip with two friends to Uttarakhand, was found dead in his hotel room in Lalkuan under mysterious circumstances. His body, discovered by hotel staff in the bathroom, bore deep cuts on his hands and a slit throat. The police, currently investigating the incident, have indicated the possibility of suicide, though the full circumstances remain unclear.
Dr. Pal had travelled to Uttarakhand with friends but, unlike them, chose to return home to Kolkata earlier than planned. According to those close to him, Dr. Pal had recently expressed a strong longing to reunite with his family, which included his wife, daughter, and parents. He booked a hotel room for the night, intending to catch a train to Kolkata the following morning. Tragically, on the evening of his stay, Dr. Pal became unreachable, leading his family to contact the hotel after several failed attempts to connect. The hotel staff subsequently forced open his door, only to discover his lifeless body in a scene that shocked both the police and the hotel workers.
Dr. Pal was a beloved figure at Jadavpur University, where he had worked as an associate professor since 2022. An alumnus of the prestigious Presidency College in Kolkata, he spent his early career teaching in two West Bengal government colleges before returning to his alma mater, Presidency University, as an educator. Dr. Pal’s colleagues, students, and friends have described him as a deeply caring individual, someone who made a lasting impact on those around him. His sudden death has left an irreplaceable void.
The Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association expressed its sorrow and disbelief, with the general secretary, Partha Pratim Roy, saying, "We are in deep shock since we heard about his death. Pal left a deep imprint as a teacher, and he was popular not only among students but also within the academic fraternity." Dr. Pal’s tragic death has left the Jadavpur University family and his close friends in mourning, with many struggling to process the sudden and profound loss of someone they described as a kind-hearted, dedicated mentor.
As investigations continue, Dr. Pal's family, friends, and colleagues are left to remember the legacy of a beloved educator, a man who committed his life to academia and positively impacted so many young minds.
