Liquor Under the Veil: Woman Nabbed with 9 Liters Hidden Beneath Burqa

Mumbai: Most of us have probably traveled by train at some point. Railways play a crucial role in helping people reach their desired destinations across the country at a low cost. While traveling, we often share space with strangers. Sometimes, we're so engrossed in our phones, conversations, or just tiredness, that we fail to observe our surroundings. This negligence becomes an opportunity for wrongdoers, resulting in incidents like thefts during train travel.
One such shocking incident happened a few days ago — one that stunned everyone who heard about it.
Among the usual hustle and bustle at the railway station—the loud noise of trains, passengers rushing around, some boarding in a hurry, while others sitting quietly looking out the window—on that day at Katihar railway station, a woman was slowly moving forward, completely covered in a burqa from head to toe. There was something strange about her walk, as if she was hiding something.
That’s precisely why this burqa-clad woman suddenly came under police radar. Authorities had received information that a female passenger was carrying suspicious items. The excise department quickly took action. Near the Maniya station, a female constable stopped the woman—and that’s where the real story began.
The constable asked, “Remove the burqa.”
The woman panicked… her movements started to seem suspicious. But when the police asked her to take off the burqa, everyone was stunned. Inside the burqa, stuck tightly to her body, were multiple tetra packs of liquor! Not just one or two—but a total of 9 liters of English liquor. She had taped the alcohol packets all over her body to hide them.
During investigation, she was identified as Sandhya Devi. She was traveling from Kumarpur in West Bengal to Majheli in Bihar and was part of a liquor smuggling network.
The way Sandhya tried to use the burqa to evade the law left even the officers astonished.
Despite prohibition being in place in Bihar, liquor smuggling and illegal sales haven’t stopped. In the past, alcohol has been found smuggled in oil tankers and luxury cars—but now, it’s even being hidden under women’s burqas. This is truly alarming.
However, thanks to the alertness of the Katihar police, this plan was foiled and Sandhya was arrested. Further investigation is now underway.
