Maharashtra Governor Flags Off Army's 'Vijay Diwas Ultra Marathon' to Commemorate 1971 War Victory

Mumbai - Maharashtra Governor C. P. Radhakrishnan on Friday flagged off the Army's 405-km long 'Vijay Diwas Ultra Marathon' to mark India's victory in the 1971 India-Pakistan War, which led to the creation of Bangladesh. The flag-off took place at the Shaheed Smarak in Colaba, Mumbai, in the presence of a large number of civil and uniformed dignitaries.

The marathon sets the stage for the iconic Army Day Parade, which will be held in Pune on January 15, 2025. The Ultra Marathon will cover a 405-km route, passing through key military cantonments and cities including Nashik, Ahmednagar, and Kolhapur, before concluding in Pune, the venue for the upcoming Army Day celebrations.

The Indian Army has invited not only professional runners but also serving personnel, defense veterans, NCC cadets, and citizens to participate in the Ultra Marathon. People can join the event through relay segments, cheer from the sidelines, or take part in local activities as the marathon passes through their cities.

“The marathon aims to connect the Armed Forces with the people, offering everyone an opportunity to honor the sacrifices of soldiers who laid down their lives for the nation. It also celebrates the valor and dedication of the Armed Forces, while promoting fitness and resilience among citizens,” said an official spokesperson.

Along the route, there will be additional activities such as motivational workshops, cultural performances, and interactions with veterans, reinforcing a message of unity, resilience, and gratitude toward those who safeguard the nation’s sovereignty.

The Ultra Marathon will conclude on December 16, Vijay Diwas, at the Pune War Memorial, commemorating the decisive victory of the Army in the 1971 Indo-Pak War. The grand finale in Pune will serve as a collective moment of pride and celebration, leading up to the Army Day Parade in January 2025.
