Mumbai Braces for Heavy Downpour: IMD Issues Orange Alert, Konkan Under Red Alert

Mumbai | July 24, 2025 : Mumbai and its neighbouring districts are set to witness another spell of intense monsoon activity as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar on Thursday, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall throughout the day. The city has been experiencing intermittent rain since early morning, prompting civic authorities to remain on high alert.

While no major waterlogging has been reported so far, officials caution that persistent showers may lead to flooding, especially in low-lying and vulnerable spots such as Sion, Hindmata, King’s Circle, Kurla, Andheri Subway, and the Dahisar and Malad underpasses. With high tide expected later today, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has advised residents to monitor official updates and avoid unnecessary travel.

Elsewhere in the state, the IMD has issued a red alert for the Konkan coast and adjoining ghat regions for the next two days, signalling the monsoon’s intensified activity. The coastal districts of Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg are expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall today and tomorrow. Similarly, Pune, Satara, and Kolhapur’s ghat areas are also under red alert.

Nashik’s ghat regions are under an orange alert, while Central Maharashtra, including parts of Marathwada, is likely to witness moderate rainfall. The Vidarbha region has been placed under a yellow alert, indicating isolated heavy showers.

In addition, the IMD has warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 30–40 kmph across parts of the state, particularly in Marathwada. Citizens are urged to stay indoors during stormy spells and avoid sheltering under trees or near old structures.

With rain intensity expected to peak over the next 24 to 48 hours, the state administration has directed all district-level authorities to remain vigilant and fully prepared to handle any emergencies. Helplines have been activated, and citizens are encouraged to follow official advisories and avoid venturing out unless absolutely necessary.

As the monsoon regains momentum, the coming days will be crucial for flood-prone and hilly regions across Maharashtra.
