Mumbai Gets Respite from Heavy Rains; Light to Moderate Showers Expected This Week

Mumbai, July 28 : After a relentless spell of heavy downpours, Mumbai has finally received a brief respite, waking up to cloudy skies and light rain showers on Monday morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has not issued any weather alert for the day, marking a notable shift from the yellow and orange alerts issued last week for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar.
The easing of torrential rainfall offers much-needed relief to residents who have been grappling with waterlogging, traffic snarls, and delayed transport services over the past several days. However, the IMD has indicated that light to moderate rainfall will continue through the week, accompanied by generally overcast skies.
According to the IMD, Mumbai will see moderate showers throughout Monday with temperatures fluctuating between 26°C and 31°C. There is a 95% chance of precipitation, as reported by AQI.in, and motorists have been advised to drive cautiously due to wet and slippery roads.
The extended forecast predicts continued rainfall over the next few days. On July 29, temperatures are expected to remain between 26°C and 31°C with moderate showers. July 30 will likely witness light rainfall with a slight drop in temperatures around 27°C. By early August, patchy showers are expected on August 1 and 2, with a marginal rise in temperatures to 28°C and 29°C, respectively.
Mumbai has recorded 45.70% of its average annual rainfall already, thanks to the early onset of the monsoon. The city typically receives around 2,207 mm of rain annually. As of July 27, the eastern suburbs have received the most rainfall at 1,117.42 mm, followed by the western suburbs at 1,032.25 mm, and the city area at 876.29 mm.
In a reassuring development for the city’s water security, the seven lakes supplying water to Mumbai have reached nearly 90% of their total storage capacity. This marks a significant improvement over the past two years—71.95% in 2024 and 61.58% in 2023 on the same date—providing assurance for an uninterrupted water supply in the months ahead.
With overcast conditions and persistent showers, commuters are advised to remain cautious while travelling, especially during peak hours. Water accumulation on roads may lead to minor disruptions, though no major flooding incidents have been reported as of Monday morning.
As Mumbai enjoys a brief breather from intense monsoon showers, residents are advised to stay updated with official weather advisories and plan their travel accordingly.
