Mumbai Implements Strict Measures Against Underage Drivers: Vehicle Seizure and Hefty Fines

Mumbai, Maharashtra,India: Mumbai, December 17, 2024: In a decisive move to enhance road safety, the Mumbai Police have announced stringent actions against drivers under the age of 18. Effective immediately, any driver found to be under 18 will have their vehicle impounded on the spot. Additionally, the age limit for operating cargo vehicles has been set at 20 years, with strict adherence mandated. This directive was issued by Dr. Suresh Kumar Mekala, Additional Director General of Police, Traffic Department.
Alongside these measures, new protocols concerning e-challan issuance, penal recovery, and vehicle impoundment have been established. In cases involving e-challans, two categories are identified: compromise and non-compromise. For compromise cases, if the offender voluntarily agrees to pay the fine, the competent police officer will accept the payment and settle the e-challan. However, if the individual refuses to pay, the police are required to file a charge sheet in court. In non-compromise cases, immediate charge sheets must be filed. If the accused fails to appear in court, the vehicle may be impounded, provided prior court approval is obtained.
The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, stipulates that individuals under 18 years of age are prohibited from operating motor vehicles in public areas. Specifically, Section 18 of the Act states that no person under the age of 18 shall drive a motor vehicle in any public place.
