Mumbai Local Horror: Stone Pelting on Ladies Coach Injures Two Women near Sewri and Reay Road

Mumbai, September 23: The safety of women commuters on Mumbai’s suburban railway network has once again come under scrutiny after two shocking incidents of stone pelting on local trains were reported from Sewri and Wadala stations. Both incidents resulted in injuries to women travelling in the ladies coach, raising serious concerns about passenger security during peak travel hours.

The first incident occurred on Thursday, September 18, near Wadala station. Anuradha Sav, a 39-year-old commuter, was preparing to alight from the train when a stone came hurling towards her. The rock first struck her mobile phone and then hit her left eye, causing a painful injury. She was rushed to Lokmanya Tilak Hospital for treatment. Following her recovery, Anuradha filed a formal complaint at the Wadala Railway Police Station, prompting an investigation.

The second incident took place on Monday as the train was travelling between Cotton Green and Reay Road stations. Harshada Pawar, a 21-year-old woman, was standing on the footboard of a crowded local train when an unknown individual threw a stone that struck her on the face. She too was immediately taken to a hospital for medical attention.

These repeated acts of stone pelting have sparked alarm and fear among daily commuters, especially women who are now questioning their safety while travelling in the city’s lifeline — the local trains. In response to these disturbing events, the Wadala Railway Police have registered cases and begun analyzing CCTV footage in an effort to identify and apprehend the culprits.

Railway officials have also taken prompt action by intensifying patrols through the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP). Additional CCTV cameras are being installed at vulnerable locations to deter such acts and ensure swift action. Moreover, awareness drives are being conducted in local communities along the railway tracks to sensitize residents about the dangers and consequences of such reckless behavior.

Despite these measures, the back-to-back incidents have exposed a critical gap in the current safety infrastructure, highlighting the urgent need for stronger surveillance and community cooperation to protect passengers from such senseless acts of violence.
