BMC Organizes E-Waste Management Exhibition to Raise Awareness in Mumbai

Mumbai, September 19 : In an effort to raise public awareness about electronic waste and promote responsible disposal practices, the Education Department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), in collaboration with Electrofine Recycling Pvt. Ltd., organized a special E-Waste Management Exhibition at N. M. Joshi School, Curry Road. The exhibition was held on Friday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM and drew participation from students of various municipal schools across the city.

The event showcased innovative projects and working models created by students, all centered around the themes of reusing, recycling, and responsible disposal of e-waste. These student-led initiatives were designed not only to offer practical solutions to the growing problem of electronic waste but also to encourage environmentally responsible behavior among citizens. According to a BMC official, such hands-on learning experiences empower students to become environmentally conscious and responsible members of society.

Over the past four months, BMC and its authorized e-waste partner, Electrofine Recycling, have successfully collected and recycled nearly 15,000 kilograms of e-waste from across Mumbai. Items such as old mobile phones, chargers, laptops, tablets, televisions, refrigerators, earphones, and modems have been safely disposed of through this campaign.

Launched in June, the e-waste collection drive has involved regular pickups from residential societies, schools, corporate offices, government institutions, and small businesses. Registered entities receive scheduled pickups and, depending on the category of e-waste, are provided with a small compensation. This organized approach not only ensures the safe handling of hazardous electronic waste but also incentivizes proper disposal.

Through this exhibition, BMC has appealed to the public to avoid discarding electronic items as general waste and instead, use proper recycling channels to dispose of them. Initiatives like this serve as a critical step toward building a more sustainable and environmentally responsible city.
